Burek Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 3, 2026
Burek: Kids Learn Languages ("Burek") is a language-practice app for young children. This policy explains exactly what the app does with information. It applies only to Burek; it takes precedence over our general Privacy Policy for this app.
Data Controller: Jakub Laszczyk, Ontario, Canada ("we", "our", or "us"). Questions: support@jakubl.com.
The short version
- We do not collect any personal information from children or parents.
- No accounts, no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics, no crash reporting, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs.
- Progress and settings stay on your device.
- The microphone is used only by the parrot game, after a grown-up allows it, and recordings are never saved.
What stays on your device
Burek stores the following locally on the device, using Apple's SwiftData framework and app settings. None of it is sent to us, and none of it is synced to iCloud:
- Game progress: stickers, streak, trophies, difficulty levels, and which words have been introduced.
- Settings: the language being practiced, the hint language, sound effects, and similar preferences.
- Class words that a grown-up adds in the grown-ups area: the word, an optional emoji, an optional photo chosen from the Photos library, and an optional voice recording made by the grown-up.
Photos are picked with Apple's system photo picker, so the app only receives the single photo you choose. Spoken words are produced on the device by Apple's built-in text-to-speech voices.
Microphone and speech recognition
The parrot game asks the child to repeat a word. With permission, the app records a short clip (about 2.5 seconds), plays it back in a funny voice, and checks whether the word was said. The clip is kept in a temporary file that is replaced by the next recording and is never uploaded by us.
To check the word, Burek uses Apple's Speech Recognition framework. When the device supports recognition for that language on the device, the check happens entirely on the device. Otherwise, Apple processes the clip on its servers to return the recognized text. That processing is done by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy; we never receive the audio or the text.
Microphone and speech recognition permissions are requested only in the grown-up setup, behind a parental gate, never in the middle of a game. If they are not allowed, the parrot game still works without listening. You can change these permissions at any time in the device's Settings > Privacy & Security, or from the grown-ups area in the app.
Network access
Burek works offline. The only network use is Apple's speech recognition described above, and Apple's own App Store and TestFlight services. Burek contains no links out of the app for children; anything for grown-ups is behind a parental gate.
Children's privacy
Burek is made for children and is designed to comply with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the GDPR (including its provisions for children), and Apple's App Store guidelines for the Kids category. Because we collect no personal information, there is nothing for us to share, sell, or disclose, and no data about your child exists on our side.
Deleting data
All of Burek's data lives on your device. You can delete class words in the grown-ups area, and deleting the app removes everything it stored. Because we hold no data, there is nothing to request from us; you are still welcome to contact us with any question.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update this page and its effective date. If a future version of Burek ever needed to collect any information, we would explain it here first and ask for a parent's consent where the law requires it.
